Golf Cart Batteries

Golf carts are powered by six lead-acid batteries beneath the front seat. Many users assume that the golf cart batteries they are dealing with are maintenance free. This lack of knowledge about the golf cart batteries eventually lead to many technical problems. The only solution is to follow a good golf cart maintenance program.

 

Equipments Used in golf cart battery maintenance
Following are the equipments used to maintain the golf cart batteries
• Wrench
• Distilled Water
• Post cleaner
• Baking soda
• Petroleum jelly
• Voltmeter
• Hydrometer , to measure the electrolyte solution’s specific gravity

 

Precautions
Remove all the jewelry and wear protective gloves and goggles. Acid spills from battery refilling leads to corrosive damage, so have as much as water and baking soda nearby. Keep your hands away from electrolyte solution and do not smoke near golf cart batteries. Acid should not be added to the batteries.

 

Maintenance procedure of Golf cart batteries
The outer appearance of the golf cart battery should be examined first. Any cracks in the container and outside the battery should be noticed first. Make sure that all the connections are free from dust, corrosion and fluids. If any damaged batteries are found they must be replaced.


Make sure all vent caps are tight. The top of the battery should be cleaned with baking soda and water to make the battery free from any foreign matter. Then dry it with a cloth. Spray cleaners and solvents should not be used. Battery terminals and cable clamps should be cleaned. Reconnect all the cable clamps and apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly. The area around the battery should always be clean and dry. Charge the Golf cart batteries fully and then add water. The Plates should be covered with enough water.


Points to remember
• Plates should not be exposed in air
• Water should not be filled all the way up to the cap
• High mineral content water should not be used
• Use only distilled water
• Battery lead plates should be submerged inside the liquid
• Add water until the plates are covered
